Warrick and Vanderburgh County HAM NET

While we are still in a planning stage of this Amateur Radio Emergency Data Network project, we are in need of information for good locations to place our nodes. This will give us some starting points to see what we need for equipment as well as who we will need to discuss our plans with for locations of the nodes.

As all of you drive around the area please attempt to take a mental note of any possible high point locations, water towers, tall buildings (+20m), towers, etc., and please email me(w9khp [at] ohiovalleyarc.org) cross streets or decimal coordinates. I am putting together a list of possible locations for our nodes.

Please take the time to read what the HAM NET is all about if you haven’t already from the link above. There is also the BroadBand HAM-NET site with additional information.

Emergency locations needing to access the network:

  • Warrick and Vanderburgh EMA EOCs
  • Gateway Hospital
  • Deaconess Hospital
  • St Vincent Hospitals
  • Local Fire and Police/Sherriff Stations
  • Red Cross Locations
  • Emergency Shelter Locations(Any we can list)
  • Add to this list….

Services

Services we have the ability to offer with this network are still to be decided for each county but here are some things we could make available.

  • VOIP (Voice Over IP) Phone
  • Video (Mobile Webcams)
  • Email
  • File Storage and Transfer
  • MAP Server
  • Web Server (Community Information Page)
  • WX Station Info
  • Real Time Chat (TeamSpeak, IRC)
  • Web EOC access
  • And More Coming

I emailed this to a few but want to make it available to all that are interested. Here are some links to what the “HAM NET” is from HamRadio360 and the AREDN team.

Great Podcast on the subject as well.

Tools to play around with.

Just some things to think about as we move forward. As you can probably tell I am pretty excited about working on this project. Not only is it a great emergency solution if we need it, it will also pool our talents as a group. This is after all a community project.

Until next time.
